tired but getting it done

10 Miles, 9:30 pace

I was feeling the effects of my 13 miles yesterday, but I was able to keep a steady pace. I ran the loop around campus again, it is very convenient to do at night because it is well lit and I am always less than two miles away from my car in case something goes wrong and it has some good hills. In the past month I have been focusing on implementing the "ChiRunning" Skills into my running, relaxing my lower legs, full body lean, using gravity and my core to lessen the load on my lower legs. It has really help my recovery time and it helps me run the same distance with less effort. My toe is still hurting but I think it is teaching me to land more gently with my feet which will help my knees (I just hope I am not over compensating for the injury only to cause another injury, but I don't think I am.) Feeling good about building up the miles. I know I need to start incorporating a lot more speed work into my training if I want to improve my times but right now I need to build up my miles for LBL then I will work on my speed. I have been thinking about Burning River 100 today, I think Mike has talked me into going for it.....

Josh,

I used to run that loop when I was down there in 1992. The big hill going up one side of the campus by the art college (DAAP??) was my favorite, but I am sure there have been some changes since I was there. There was also a great big cemetery you could run in down the hill and past Clifton. I don't remember the name, but we went there once or twice on some longer runs.

If I haven't said it before I LOVED being at UC, it was some of the best times of my life. I even ran downtown to some Reds games and then back up the long hill on Vine Street.

The running/training seems to be going well. How many miles a week are you putting in?

Mike,

The campus sure has changed alot latley but the general loop is still the same. I know the hill by DAAP well. Unfortunately it isn’t very smart to venture to far off of that loop, especially at night; Clifton isn’t a very safe area these days. And I wouldn’t even dream of running down Vine Street at night, not without a bullet proof vest at least. We set a new record for homicides in Cincinnati last year, and I am sure that area played a significant role in that. Running up Vine street from downtown to Clifton must have been one hell of a work out, that is a steep hill and very long! You were at UC for the good ole days, I get here and the fire Huggins and screw everything up!

Rob,

The training is going well. I am running around 50 miles a week right. With Burning River 100 now in the future I will try to increase that gradually. I will build up my miles for the next month to get ready for LBL. Do you know anything about the course in regards to hills, terrain or elevation change?

josh,

re: your questions about the BR100 course. I would expect much more of what you got at the BT50k. There will be some reprieves of roads, etc....but in general what I know of it is very similar to the 50k. In fact, I think part of that 50k is on the BR100 course.

There is one section that will be around 75-80 miles that I describe as "pure magic." It is lined with evenly spaced pine trees for about 200 yards, and it is SO cool to me. I plan on doing many runs throughout the entire course in the spring and summer before the race, so maybe if you are up this way we can run some more of it. There will also be some course familiarization runs in May I think where they run the entire course in three days....if you haven't signed up for the BR yahoo mailing list, do so and you will get a lot of valuable info. You can do it via the website.

I am running the "Dirty Dog 10k" tomorrow morning near Youngstown and have to get to bed.
